I’m currently knee-deep in my MSc digital marketing programme at the University of Exeter. For over three years, I’ve been immersed in the world of content writing, social media marketing, and brand strategy. My heart has always been drawn to the power of words and the art of storytelling.
My background might surprise you: I’m a trained engineer! But as much as I’ve loved my work, I yearned to delve deeper into the theoretical aspects of marketing and communication. This curiosity was further fuelled by my mom, a seasoned journalist whose passion for media communication has always inspired me.
During my post-graduation studies, I realised the importance of keeping my writing skills sharp, especially in a program focused mainly on marketing rather than the creative aspect of it. So, I began my search for a part-time opportunity or internship that would allow me to stay connected to writing while pursuing my degree.
And then, I guess, fate intervened. I saw that my internship application with BlueSky Thinking had been selected. At this moment I was juggling assignments like a pro, hustling to keep up with life, and I probably would have hit the panic button. However, amidst the chaos, I had a moment of clarity — “this is too good an opportunity to pass on”.
So I took the plunge. And let me tell you, it’s hands down one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
The job was completely remote and flexible, but still incredibly well-structured. My role was to craft articles for the website based on research from leading global business schools. And I really did get to explore some fascinating topics — from business conflicts to sustainability, linguistic discrimination to family-work dynamics, you name it.
As my internship progressed, I found myself not only honing my writing skills but also developing a deeper appreciation for the importance of effective communication in the business world.
One of the things I appreciated most about my time at BlueSky was the emphasis on creativity and innovation. I was encouraged to think outside the box, explore new ideas, and push the boundaries of traditional storytelling.
As I read different research papers from top business schools, I felt like I was exploring a chest of incredible ideas. But what really made the job exciting was the chance to add my personality into the writing with interesting pop-culture references (and me being me) of course I brought a marketing angle to it.
In this entire journey, Kerry and Chloë have both been really kind and approachable. They’ve always taken the time out to actually sit down and give me constructive feedback on each piece of writing, which really helped me understand the nuances of copywriting that I tended to overlook sometimes. With their support, I have been trying to amplify the impact of my work by sharing it on my social profiles, which has added so much value to my portfolio.
I can confidently say that even though I’m passionate about branding and marketing, my heart lies in writing. I have realised now that I never want to stop!
